New Home for IPDS Information
In the summer of 2008 the IPDS web site (ipds.co.uk) will close and all the content will transfer here, to the IPDS pages of the Fire Service College site. If you have ipds.co.uk saved as a 'favourite' you should change the link. All the old information is here including the EFS Database, the Role Maps, Personal Qualities and Attributes for each operational role and advice on ADCs and the Firefighter Selection Tests. There is new material too such as a Code of Practice for IPDS that explains how the components fit together, a comprehensive User Guide that helps you locate the detailed guidance and Good Practice from around the country. All this can be found by clicking on the links to the left of this screen.

IPDS logoThe Integrated Personal Development System (IPDS) enables fire & rescue services to train and develop their staff to meet the changing demands that face the service. It also enables people to assess their development needs against a set of national occupational standards and seek the appropriate training and development at the correct point in their career.

By establishing the requirements for each role in the fire & rescue service, it is possible to provide development programmes based on the personal skills and knowledge objectives found within the Development Modules. These range from practical skills such as driving, to managerial skills such as interview techniques.

The development cycle is key to enabling development opportunities from the establishment of need, right through to the assessment and evaluation of the development opportunity provided. The Quality Assurance Framework & Toolkit can provide advice and guidance for each step in the development process.

Should new development needs be identified to address fresh challenges for the service, modules will be developed to meet these needs.

The aim of IPDS is to reduce personal and organisational risk and to promote personal and organisational development.

The central stewardship of IPDS is now being managed by the Organisational Development Centre at the Fire Service College. Whilst we would like to be able to support everyone individually we would soon be overwhelmed. So if you need help with your own personal development, please contact your line manager or your Human Resource department. They will be able to give you locally relevant advice. If you are a Human Resource manager and you need advice on IPDS policy, please feel free to contact us by e-mail
