For many years there has been no standard or benchmark against which to assess competence. We have been assessing personnel, but not against nationally recognised standards. Therefore, to ensure that we have a safe and competent workforce National Occupational Standards (NOS) for all Fire and Rescue Service Roles have been established. These standards allow us to objectively measure an individual’s competence and importantly, to a consistent standard across the UK.

This database details the Rolemaps, National Occupational Standards and Development Modules for your role in the Emergency Fire Services. It is a tool which can be utilised by all members of their Fire and Rescue Services to support the Learning and Development Strategy of their Fire and Rescue Services.

The National Joint Council (NJC) has agreed the roles for staff working to ‘Grey Book’ conditions. The National Occupational Standards that make the units that form each of these roles are laid down in the NJC document – Fire and Rescue Services Rolemaps.

Please note that this database includes those NJC Rolemaps and also National Occupational Standards and Development Modules that can be used for other roles in the Fire and Rescue Service.

We recommend that as you use this database, you refer to the NJC document to confirm the status of material that you are accessing.

The NJC document can be found here.
